1761 Map of the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas, BVI, St.Martin and St. Kitts and Nevis

Ocean going vessels have long been significant to these islands. The original inhabitants were the Ciboney tribes then Arawak Indians and soon to follow the more aggressive Carib tribes sailed into the islands. In 1493 the Spanish first found the Virgins with Christopher Columbus at the helm. Over the centuries, control of the islands went from the Spanish, Dutch and English. It was the privateers however that truly ruled. While there is little hard evidence of these activities in the Islands, local legend has it that Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard, operated from here. Volcanic terrain, hidden bays and dangerous reefs made this the perfect pirate gunk hole. Sir Francis Drake, Captain William Kidd, Bluebeard and Black Sam Bellamy all

operated from the BVI. Robert Louis Stevenson based his book Treasure Island on the islands that make up the BVI.

The Virgin Island yacht charter industry started in the 1960’s with the Cary family opening the Moorings. With the almost perfect sailing weather and protected Sir Francis Drake Channel, the Virgins are the ideal place for your charter experience. Due to the variety and proximity of the islands your sailing holiday can vary from leisurely island hopping all through the Channel to a day trip to Anegada or an open water cruise to St. Bart's. Your choice, after all it is your reality. The weather is perfect and so is the sailing, along with secluded beaches and vistas that can only be called a “million dollar view”.
